Giola: Everything You Need to Know About Thassos’ Top Attraction

There is no doubt that Thassos is mostly famous for its beaches, with countless golden sandy shores, calm waters, and lush greenery stretching all the way to the coast. But there is something truly special about this island: a place of rare beauty that looks like nothing else you’ll find here. And that place is Giola.

If you’re looking for the highlight of your holiday in Thassos, Giola definitely deserves a spot on your list. Let’s take a closer look at everything that makes this destination so unique!

What is Giola?

Giola is one of Greece’s few natural sea pools, hidden on the southern tip of the island. It is surrounded by imposing schist rocks that trap seawater, creating an oasis that looks almost like a teardrop when viewed from above. The pool is approximately 20 by 15 metres in size and around 3 metres deep, while its water is constantly replenished by the waves crashing into it. At one end, the two sides of the rock formation slope down towards each other, reaching almost the same level as the surface of the sea.

How Was Giola Formed?

There are several myths surrounding the creation of this natural sea pool. According to one version, Zeus carved the rock so that Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, could swim there. Perhaps this is why many locals also refer to Giola as the “Tear of Aphrodite.” Another myth once again features the father of the gods, claiming that the mischievous Zeus created Giola so he could spy on one of his lovers from there – hence the “eye” shape often associated with the natural pool.

But the myths don’t stop at Giola itself. The dreamlike landscape surrounding it also inspired the imagination of the ancient Greeks, becoming the source of even more legends. The best-known story says that the Sirens lived on Asteriotiko, a deserted islet directly opposite Giola, where they lured sailors with their enchanting songs.

Beyond the myths, geology offers its own explanation for how Giola was formed. For millions of years, the powerful waves and strong winds of the area have sculpted the rugged landscape, essentially carving away at the rocks until this extraordinary natural pool was formed.

Why Is Giola Worth Visiting?

Imagine a hidden trail surrounded by greenery, crystal-clear waters glowing in the sunlight, and breathtaking views. It’s no coincidence that Giola is one of the most Instagrammable spots on Thassos!

The experience begins as soon as you start the descent. You’ll need a little patience, as you’ll have to follow a rocky trail before reaching the natural pool. Don’t worry, though: both the scenic route and the destination itself are more than worth the effort.

When you reach Giola, you’ll be greeted by an almost otherworldly sight: a natural pool filled with crystal-clear waters that are warmer than the open sea. The colour changes depending on the light, ranging from deep blue to beautiful emerald shades. And if you simply want to sit back and enjoy the endless blue of the Aegean Sea, the surrounding rocks are perfect for sunbathing and taking selfies.

If, however, you’re looking for an extra dose of adrenaline, get ready to jump from heights of up to 8 metres. A word of caution, though: Giola is no more than 3 metres deep and its bottom is rocky rather than sandy, so diving headfirst is best avoided.

How Do I Get to Giola?

Giola is located near Astrida, approximately 40 km from Limenas (around 1 hour by car) and 10 km from Potos (about 15 minutes by road).

More specifically, follow the main road that circles Thassos until you reach a turn with signs pointing towards Giola. After turning off the main road and driving for 2-3 km along a dirt track, you’ll leave your car in a clearing. From there, you’ll continue on foot for around 30 minutes over rough terrain, following the arrows painted onto the rocks.

Useful Tips for Your Trip

  • Before setting off, make sure you have everything you need for a challenging hike, including plenty of water, a hat, sunglasses, light snacks, and suitable clothing.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes for the descent rather than flip-flops.
  • There is no shade in the area, so it is essential to bring SPF 50+ sunscreen and reapply it regularly.
  • Getting in and out of the natural pool requires some swimming ability and a bit of effort. If you think you may struggle, it’s best to simply relax on the rocks instead.
  • Because of its rugged surroundings and shallow depth, Giola is not recommended for families with young children.
  • Don’t forget your phone or camera so you can capture every moment!
